The repeal of the Exclusion Acts allowed Chinese to leave their Chinatowns and begin to integrate with American society. Families reconnected, students came for advanced studies, professionals came, and persecuted came escaping the Cultural Revolution taking place in China. This wave of immigration was so great that the Chinese American population doubled in ten year. This new migrant was not a rural peasant like the ones that came before. He or she came from urban areas and expected to get ahead in America. One of the newest Chinese immigrants are children adopted from Chinese orphanages. In 2006, the US issued 6500 visas to Chinese orphans. Since 1991, Americans have adopted 55,000 Chinese children. Most Chinese immigrants in the third wave have settled first in California, second in New York, followed by Hawaii, Texas, New Jersey, Illinois, Washington, Florida, Virginia, and Massachusetts.
